The time period in this case is actually 2009 - 2010. We had a small garden in our flat balcony, and there was a lot of open area around with a good density of trees. So there were many birds around, including sparrows. We placed a bird feeder, and a water bowl. Initially the sparrows would come, but fly away the moment they saw us. Over a period of time, they were not scared of us, and would walk next to us! Sometimes crows would come do drink water, and the sparrows would not budge! We also wanted to grow some coriander at home. But the moment they sprouted a little, the sparrows would nibble at them. So we continued to plant coriander for the sparrows. It was a pleasure to see them!

This is more of an observation: earlier to the time period mentioned, there were more sparrows visible and I think every day. Even nests were observed occasionally. During the time period mentioned is when we saw considerable number of sparrows at a time. Recently - since the last 2 weeks or so, I have noticed 2-3 sparrows around our house occasionally. We have placed bird feeders and water bowls hoping more come.
