Sumant Joshi - Mahatma Nagar Mahatma Nagar, Parijat Nagar Nashik Maharashtra

Nasik has this crazy guy called Mr Shekhar Gaekwad who goes around planting trees where ever he finds empty space. He has devised a small trolley for watering these trees. He doesn't care whether it is government or private, roadside or garden spending his own money and time, irrespective whether anyone helps him, makes fun of him or not. He also distributes little nest boxes made of plywood - which he makes in his spare time - free to anyone who will take them. He says birds are reducing since they have no place to nest in. I had also realized that I hadn't seen sparrows in the neighborhood I lived in and I happened to meet this guy. I purchased 8 nest boxes from him though he insisted in giving them free and installed them around my apartment in windows. I have also placed small watering devices I have made nearby. Immediately, sparrows have started appearing. When I go into my balcony now, I am faced with a couple of indignant individuals peeping out from their nests, twittering their alarm calls. I off course apologize for invading their privacy and retreat ASAP. For some unknown reason they don't use the drinkers I have devised.

I agree that reducing numbers has something to do with loss of nesting space. I remember seeing sparrows in old buildings where they used to have ventilators which were perfect for nesting pigeons and sparrows. Maybe architects should be advised to make their buildings more bird friendly.
