Chakravarthy Sankya - ESI Hospital Quarters. Old Hubli Hubli Karnataka

I live in these Quarters and I was a 14 years old when we first shifted here. There were MANY MANY sparrows at that time and it was a very common sight. These nests were built in holes in a huge wall. These holes were built so that water could drain out from the high level mud behind the wall, but Sparrows used to build nests there. We as kids tried to find nests and young sparrows but later came to know that the wild birds killed their young if they found smell of humans near those young ones. Then on we never tried to find nests, instead tried to feed the adult birds. One bird lived in our home, in the balcony and often used to get some companion. Off late, the number has drastically decreased. Nowadays, seeing 20-30 birds in a day is a big number. I miss those days. I have even stopped sending messages when i am at home, because I read somewhere that birds are affected by sms. I dont let my parents message anyone unnecessarily. Strictly no forwarded messages at the time i am at home, because I know that sparrows stay there. But ofcourse, we live in a campus and I cant ask everyone to behave like me. We are lucky that we still can see a few sparrows everyday on our terrace. I just hope that some day, when I have kids, they dont have to go to 'forestariums' to see these house sparrows.
