A MURTHY - Alaknanda Alaknanda New Delhi Delhi

There was a nest of sparrows (some 10-15 birds) in a tree right in front of our home. They would come inside the house too occasionally. They and other birds like pigeons and crows used to eat rice in our verandah. Foolishly we stopped keeping food when the bird flu epidemic (2006 or 2007 I think but I am not sure)spread to India. Gradually the sparrows vanished but the crows and pigeons are still around. The sparrows need a kind of bushy or leafy tree which offers camouflage or hiding place from predators like crows and eagles. They also need a steady supply of grains as they are not carnivorous like crows which eat just anything.

We used to see many sparrows in the eighties and nineties. The sparrows had a nest in a tree in front of our house and used to sit on our verandah. They used to eat only fresh boiled rice and rejected any leftovers. It is very sad to see them gone now though the tree cover has improved.
