The year 1984.There was a hailstorm one night and the next morning we saw 50 to 60 sparrows strewn all around the garden. It was a sad sight. Most of the sparrows lying there completely wet and dazed. My daughters and I collected all the ones that were alive and kept them on a sari infront of the heater to dry.Our dog , a labrador retriever, was quite disgusted with us! We managed to save most of the sparrows, the ones who died were given a decent burial. Those days one could see plenty of sparrows, unlike today.

I feed stray dogs and the sparrows would come to feed on their leftovers. So now I leave rice for the sparrows in a plate, and I invariably find them waiting for me arond the dogs' feeding time. I find them hopping in and out of the hedge also, but although I have kept small pots in the few trees that I have, I haven't seen them nesting there.
