I have uploaded many photos and videos in Citizen Sparrow's Facebook page. We have plenty of sparrows here and they assemble daily in our garden. My parents feed them powdered biscuits and rice grains daily while I go to office. We have also kept a gas trolley with water in the garden. They use it for drinking water as well as bathing. Other birds like Oriental Magpie Robin, Black Headed and Red Cheeked Bulbuls, Mynah, Pigeons, Purple Rumped Sunbird and Ashy Prinia also visit our garden and bathe in the tub. They also eat the biscuits.
On Sundays I can't resist clicking their photos and recording videos! They are so cute, adorable and child like. They are spoilt brats and a pampered lot. One video which has been shared a lot and appreciated is my video on the sparrows enjoying a bath in the gas trolley. It's very clear....has come out well. Watching their antics really makes happy and relieves the mind. Sparrows are a delight to watch. I am a bird lover and love all the birds. But sparrows have a special corner in my heart :)

These sparrows are very adorable, cute, shy. They also don't sit still for long...very chanchal by nature. But they always reward me with precious photos which give me lot of happiness and peace of mind. I found some interesting facts about these little beauties:
1. They like powedered biscuits and rice grains a lot. They love dried Tulsi seeds but don't eat the fresh seeds.
2. They are wary of people. Before drinking water from the trolley kept in the garden they look carefully all around, then dip their beak in the water and drink. Once convinced, they dive and enjoy their bath.
3. They can't tolerate heat. I have seen them panting in the heat and when they see the water they are delighted. They sit under the sunshade and clean themselves throughly. This also helps them to cool off. In extreme heat, sparrows tend to suffer from heat stroke and some also die.
4. Sparrows are like children.....very innocent, shy, delicate and also scared of any new thing or persons. They need to be taken care of. Citizens should feed them and if they have built a nest in your house, they should consider themselves lucky and protect it from corws, monkeys & other intruders. Only then will future generations be aware of house sparrows and also see them.
5.Another thing I have seen is that they can't tolerate noise. When some soft music is played or shlokas are chanted, they sit quietly. It looks as if they are listening to the music or shlokas and enjoying it. But when there are arguements & people talk in loud voice, lot of noise from vehicles, they become restless and keep fluttering to various places.
6. Clean your garden regularly and dig the soil well. The worms, insects will come to the surface and provide source of food for the sparrows.
7. Sparrows like to eat the flowers and seeds in weeds.
Of course when the sparrows are hungry and they don't find any biscuits, grains or eatables scattered for them, they eat the Hibiscus flower buds. Have pecked all the Hibiscus buds yesterday in the garden. It's a bit irritating.

Today was the happiest moment of my life. Saw close to 50 sparrows both male and female aroung 8 a.m. in our garden. Looked like Navi Mumbai Sparrows Conference! Some gathered on the fence, some were sitting on the plants and ground...seemed to be having some serious discussion. We always feed them cooked rice and also uncooked rice, biscuits, etc.
Got up early, made tea for mom and me and woke her up. Also showed her the sparrows. Mom was delighted :) It was a real treat to watch almost 50 sparrows today on Mother's Day :) Photos posted in Facebook page of Citizen Sparrow.
A mother sparrow is the epitome of love...cares for her chicks. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers.

I lived in Anushakti Nagar since childhood and in 1980 and 1990s, there used to be many sparrows. But in late 90's and 2000 onwards, the sparrows were not sighted and their population had dwindled alarmingly. There are plenty of crows and monkeys in Anushakti Nagar. These destroy the sparrow's nest and eat the eggs. Mobile towers also came up in large numbers near Anushakti Nagar and Chembur. In my opinion, all these reasons have contributed to the sharp drop in sparrow's population. Hence we were dishearted not
to hear the sparrow's chirp for many years.

House sparrows are a pleasure to watch. The sparrows sit in the garden in groups and play in the mud, plucking the weeds and eating them and also sit on the Tulsi plant in our 'Tulasi Maadam'. Ours is a ground floor apartment. We keep a gas trolley with water for them. They drink water from it and also enjoy a good swim. A sparrow and its family have their nest in the first floor of our building. Every morning we wake up to the chirping of sparrows and the purple-rumped sunbird. Ocassionally the red-whiskered bulbul visits our house. All citizens should keep water for the birds in summer. Wooden shelters should be placed in nook or corner of the house and building so that sparrows can build their nest. One can also take a cardboard box, fill it with cotton and twigs and place it on the attic or drying area or verandah – any place which is accessible to sparrows. Spary neem based preparations and avoid chemical pesticides. These harm the sparrow’s reproductive system when it eats the seeds. I request everyone to do their bit to save the house sparrows.
I wrote a blog about sparrows in May 2010 to share my joy and experience of watching the sparrows with everyone. The link of my blog is http://vlakshmi12.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/fable-about-sparrows/ I have added the photos and videos of the sparrows, sun birds, bulbuls in it. I have also mentioned a fable about the sparrows in my blog. Request you all to view it, post your comments and give maximum likes so that it can help the cause of the lovely sparrows.
