Way back in 2010, there were just about 5-7 sparrows in my garden. Now in 2013 their number has increased to 13!
The hibiscus shrub next to my compound wall and an adjacent coconut tree in our neighbour's garden are their homes. They are also found on an empty space between the shutter door and the ceiling of our neighbour's grocery store.
My daughter has written about their antics in her blog here- http://myeverydayjoysoflife.blogspot.in/2012/12/sparrows-in-my-frontyard.html

Thekkur(my birth place) is a village situated about 20 km away from city of Thanjavur, Thanjavur district. As we have large sized paddy fields, Sugarcane fields and coconut farms, flock of sparrows used to built their nest in coconut trees and sugarcane fields. The nests will swing to and fro like simple pendulum while breeze flows. It is very beautiful to watch and one my favorite time pass during my childhood. During Paddy harvest times the sparrows will be in very large number. Its pleasant to watch and hear flock of sparrows were flying and chirping over paddy fields, and used to feed our golden colored grain. But we kids along with family members used to protect our grains by making huge sounds by beating drums and plates esp after sunrise and before sunset. And we followed our tradition that to hang a pile of paddy and water pot in the front and back of our home to feed sparrows during summer and harvest times. Still the memories are crossing over my mind whenever i see a sparrow. It was a wonderful period in my childhood.

With urbanisation, the sparrows will soon disappear from here too , I feel lucky from all of the rest just because we can soothe ourselves with the twitter of the humble small creatures. The area I mentioned is like a small hamlet , though in the heart of the city it is genuinely primitive and a bit old fashioned in architecture. And that is why we have sparrows still , the mud tile roof structured houses with their mud walls provides beautiful nests for the sparrows but sadly enough all they have now is an electric pole with a hell lot mess of wires to hang on. I spot sparrows everyday , hear them chirping but the difference is I don't see any nests or happy, healthy sparrows . I spot them only in the morning and don't hear them in the evening like when I was a child. I request you to provide me with some nests and stuff to feed water and provide shelter to these house sparrows and to other birds like peigons that are strangely attracted to this electric pole
